KAHVIA TEETÄ
Galleri Anders Bergman
11.-14.12. 2008 klo 12-17.00
Tervetuloa!!!

"Kahvia Teetä" on liikkuva projektini jossa fakta ja fiktio arvioidaan
uudelleen.
kutsutun finanssikriisin johdosta, josta syystä kattaus on aiempaa laajempi.

Kaikki lämpimästi Tervetuloa!!

*Laura Wesamaa on valmistunut Kuvataideakatemiasta ja asuu ja työskentelee
Helsingissä. Valmistumisen jälkeen hän on pitänyt näyttelyn Kluuvin
Galleriassa(2008) sekä osallistunut useisiin ryhmä/yhteisnäyttelyihin.*

"Kahvia Teetä" is my mobile project in which fact and fiction are
revaluated. I want to juxtapose things (including my own effort) to search
for their worth, as well as discuss where the picture ends and reality
starts. At Anders's the project gets again new, a very specific frame
because of the space as well as the prevalent state of the world and the so
called financial crisis, in consequence the setting will be extended from
before.

Everybody warmly Welcome!!

*Laura Wesamaa studied in the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts and lives and
works in Helsinki. After graduating she has exhibited in Kluuvi Gallery
Helsinki (2008) and taken part in several groupshows.*

“Epämääräisiä Porvarillisia Unelmia”
Johanna Sipilä - Galleri Bergman 26.11. - 7.12.2008

“Vague Bourgeois Dreams”
Johanna Sipilä - Galleri Bergman 26.11. - 7.12.2008

“As I´ve worked on the paintings and collages of this exhibition, I´ve contemplated my fear of the middle-class life.
Fear of losing the ideals and dreams that you had when you were young. Fear of the creeping dreams of the very own empire and material possessions enclosed with a fence from the outside world.
Fear that in the process of protecting this empire your mind turns against the surprising adventures and diversity of life.”

Johanna Sipilä got the MA degree from Academy of Fine Arts Helsinki 2007, she also lives and works in Helsinki.

"Waldénin työt ilmaisevat tarkasti miten vaikeata on tutkia omia menettelytapojaan. Maalaukset kuvaavat maalauksia edeltäviä piirroksia ja näyttävät kaikki tahrat ja sotkut jotka tahattomasti syntyvät maalausprosessin aikana. Suhde siihen mitä yleensä on maalatun pinnan ulkopuolella on nyt
maalauksen teemana. Waldénin töissä tilojen ja kohteiden monimieliset ulottuvuudet osoittavat pyrkimystä pois kaksiulotteisen tilan ja
perspektiivin tyranniasta."

Andreas Waldén on syntynyt Ruotsissa ja saanut koulutuksensa Kuvataideakatemiassa Helsingissä. Galleri Bergmanin näyttelyssä on
kymmenkunta uutta maalausta.

Tervetuloa avajaisiin 12.marraskuuta kl.18.00 !

"Waldén's work is a precise articulation of the difficulties to examine your own way of procedure. The paintings depict the proceeding drawings and show all the marks and smudges that accidentally occur when painting. This relationship to what normally lies outside the painted surface has become the subject of the painting.
The ambiguous dimensions of the spaces and objects that appear in his work
signalize the attempt to reach beyond the demands of a two dimensional space and the tyranny of the perspective point."

Andreas Waldén was born in Sweden and got his education at the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts in Helsinki. About ten new paintings are on show in the exhibition at Galleri Bergman.

Warmly welcome to the opening reception November 12th at 6 pm!

October - November 2008
Krešimir Popović
light/drawings
Exhibition,
30.10 - 9.11
Opening reception 29.10 18-21h

In Galleri Bergman series of international interaction and influence on the Finnish art, the turn has come to Krešimir Popović. He is a Croatian and is living and working in Helsinki, where he has a MA degree from the Academy of fine arts. His upcoming exhibition starts right here with this story introduction.

"The night was falling down, it finally got a bit colder, but still, stones were burning beneath his rubber shoe sole. That was the time of the day that he loved the most. He sat down on the dried grass, took a sandwich from his bag and looked around. Far ahead in a valley he saw something that was almost like a small lake, where sheep were drinking water. From the distance they looked like small toys, soft and slow. While he was chewing his sandwich, he was calculating if it is worth to go there. It would mean another two hours of walking. But the scene was so appealing, that he took some time to rest, then stood up and slowly started to walk there. He wanted at least to take a couple of photos there because there were no shadows, the light conditions were perfect and the colours fresh and lively, quite the opposite of the stones that surrounded him."

October 2008
Sinem Baykal
"1" Light installation work
Exhibition,
October 15- 26 @ Galleri Bergman
Uudenmaankatu 23.

Sinem Baykal comes from Turkey where she was studying fine arts and did her BA degree at the Bilkent University in Ankara. She is currently finishing her MA degree at the academy of fine arts in Helsinki. We are now very happy to host her first solo exhibition at Galleri Bergman. This exhibition is as well part of her graduation work.

"1" Light installation work by Sinem Baykal

This work was born out of the inspiration of seeing the northern lights and the mysticism that surrounds them. I think we have all during history been curious in the sky and its possibilities. We have tried to find the meaning in it and thought about what could be found behind the planets and the horizon of the sky. Maybe the inspiration received from the sky is related to the search for a God or maybe what we see in the sky is indeed what or how he or she looks like. There are several accounts in history related to the beliefs in stars and their relationship to the spirits of people. Added to this are the cross-national believes related to each person having a guiding star that to me is as a concept very interesting. Installation is aiming at exploring the ideas behind existence, actions, unities, entities and the individual in this universe.

Shoji Kato
My Marks
Prelude
1-10 - 12.10.2008
Opening reception 1.10.2008 18:00

In the first and second weeks of October 2008, Galleri Bergman presents Shoji Kato's new works as an installation-setting arranged to the uniqueness of the gallery space. The works consist of photographs and paintings. This is his first solo show in Helsinki and titled "My Marks: prelude" This show is the first half part of the series, and second part will be shown in Gallery Huuto, Helsinki, in February 2009. Following is the artist's text for the exhibition.

How do you make your marks?

My interest in the relationship between personality and environment brought my camera into spaces marked, not by vandalism or revolt, but by freedom of expression. The spaces embrace innumerable individual marks on the walls, doors and an outdoor field, that portray body collectives. The photographed situations reveal the cultures embedded within particular settings, for example the markings of bored police officers killing time while guarding an embassy. But they also indicate something universal about human nature. The images, I hope, provide openings into the mysterious coordination of human imagination, memory and desire with our immediate surroundings.

Another part of the installation is a group of rather small and meticulous paintings inspired by the photographed situations. Yet they are pure abstractions, reflecting the sublime within the banal event: transforming diversity into singularity. My approach to image making echoes the process caught in the photographs, as my own marks are diffused into this gallery space.

Contemporary Swedish Portraiture
Henrik Stenberg / Jakob Avenius Anckarsvärd

Opening Friday 19/9 18:00-21:00
Duration 19/9 - 28/9, 2008
Galleri Bergman, Uudenmaankatu 23c (inner yard) Helsinki

Where is the Swedish portrait scene heading today?
Jakob Anckarsvärd and Henrik Stenberg represent two contrasting approaches though neither of them use physical models but rather aim for a more general position in their respective subject matter.

Anckarsvärd's work stem from the realm of psychology with previous studies and work in this field. The paintings show unflattering, disturbing and dark individuals. The figures are no specific persons but rather part toil with recognition, challenging the beholder to meet the gaze of the portraitee. Anckarsvärd work with taboos that exist within psychology and mental disorders, that we more or less can be familiar with.

Stenberg's portraits also work with recognition but have both narrative, historical and humourus references. There are pompous, baroque and admiring qualities in the paintings that with the help of comic strip aesthetics demonstrate the way style and posing has changed throughout time. This also points to how we humans are rather naïve and unaware of the relativeness in our ideals, which we ourselves tend to regard as the peak of modernity.

Where Stenberg's portraits start in humor, ending in suggestive doubt and self irony, Anckarsvärd's images contrast with a moving acquaintance that is best digested with a pinch of humor. Juxtaposing Stenberg's and Anckarsvärd's portraits makes for an uncertain outcome with meticulous dynamics. This aims to enhance the complete experience as well as open up for a wider spectre of interpretations seizing the spectator in the middle. Galleri Bergman welcome you to an unconventional meeting within
contemporary portraiture.
